And on the helmet issue... I have a friend that retired from the FD. He told me basically over 45mph all a helmet does is keep your head intact so you dont have to have a closed casket. He had seen many motorcycle accidents and deaths in his 20+ years and I greatly respect his opinion. I do not think it should be a law just as I dont think seat belts should. Granted they both "can" save lives.. but it should be your choice!

^ I don't agree with that at all. I've seen accidents where guys went down at triple digit speeds their helmets kept them alive. I've heard that excuse too many times and I don't agree with it ever. "I'm going to die anyway" is a horrible justification that people use to not wear helmets. Gear up, no matter what.

    Why wait?

There is about one motorcycle fatality, in Boulder Canyon, every year. I just cringe when I see a temp tag on the bike in front of me. Too many newbs that just want to rip it up. Saturday afternoon ain't the time.

10 to 1 says he didn't have a motorcycle endorsement on his license.

Yeah, I gotta chime in on that. I've been off on the racetrack at 90+, and because of my safety gear, walked away with nothing more than bruises.

We make our choices, we accept the consequences.

Who cares, helmet, no helmet, safety gear or not. Unless you know the road, have a clear field of vision and hopefully some room to pass, back off the throttle. When i passed in the canyon, there was plenty of room and i rode mc's capable of responding when i twisted the wick. No they were not crotch rockets and no i did not wear a helmet.

Gear or not, people pull in front of, turn left or NEVER SAW the MC. Would wearing a helmet have saved them maybe maybe not. I do find it pathetic when a rider is killed the media emphasizes how the rider was not wearing a helmet.
Let's completely toss out the fact the MC HELMETLESS RIDER was hit by a drunk doing 75 in a 30 @ 3am wrong side of the road and no lights. Yep that helmet would have made a difference.

Same for a gun used in a crime, Assault Weapon, High Capacity, Not for anything other than killing etc.

In this case the guy fucked up and paid for it, condolences to all.

There are lots of accidents where the helmet will make no difference. Possibly this was one.

I have crashed at some high speeds and ran my head in to things on the way. I know a buddy personally who has hit a wall at over 100 mph and is walking and talking now thanks to the gear he wore. I have witnessed a friend get his head run over and lived. Gear saves lives period. There are some instances where no matter what happens gear wont save you, but to write it off like it doesnt mean anything is something else.

I do agree on the helmet law. It should be personal choice.

Sounds like you and your riding buddies should be more careful.
