Default Who knows the Arkansas River

I want to tube or raft it probably on the Kansas side maybe next yr. My wife will be w/ me and she's not crazy about rapids but I would like to still get some rocky scenery before the water gets too murky and flat. I can get all the dirt and cow poop I want in NE, . Where would a guy dump in at? Isn't there a dam outside of Pueblo that would slow things down?

Only part I know is rafting through the royal gorge. We almost lost our raft. Serious pucker factor. I just about had to change my shorts afterwards.

No rapids on the Arkansas in Kansas that I know of (hell lots of sections with not enough water to tube or raft).

One side note, within the borders of Kansas, the Arkansas river is not the Are-Kin-Saw, its the Are-Cans-Es (and any town or street named Arkansas in the state is also pronounced the same). In Kansas if you say Are-Kin-Saw, you better be referring to something outside the borders of the state of Kansas.

I know the river...as far as Colorado goes being a kayaker. Not sure what your gonna find that far down though. Always watch out for low head dams.

    Default Prisons

All the prisons dump their sewage in the Arkansas. Lots of inmates are drugged and the drugs do not break down in the sewer plants. You sure you want to tube it? You could kayak from Canon City to Portland for a nice day trip.Or even all the way to Pueblo Reservoir. The reservoir is dammed. Google earth can give a good aerial view.

Well... not since you put it that way, lol. I'm more worried about the HUGE cattle ranch in Western KS on the North side of the river. Tks for confirming the Dam in Pueblo.

    Thumbs up I do.

    20 Nickels,
I happen to run a rafting company on the Arkansas in Canon City. Nice thing about the Arkansas is that there is a section of water for any ability your wife included. You don't have to do the Royal Gorge and I would most likely suggest Bighorn Sheep Canyon which sounds like it might suit both of you. Check out Raftmasters.com. The information there may help you. Hope you have a good float.

You sure about that? Doesn't Canon City have a sewage plant? That's way past illegal. I'll call the Southeastern Colorado Water Conservancy District tomorrow and see what they say.

I've canoed from Portland to the reservoir and from east Pueblo to Avondale. Lots of dragging and lots of underwater hazards.
