Default SuperNova vs Rem 870 vs Moss 500?

    Hi Guys,

Im looking for a Home Defense Tactical Shotgun (too many chapters of Walking Dead for me) and im unsure about what line choose. Im in between Benelli Super Nova Tactical, Rem 870 Tactical and Mosseberg 500, im looking for 18" barrel, pistol grip, pump action, light way, tactical sights, picatinny for an eotech in the future and the ability to install my Stremlight TLR-2s (need to be in the pump action area for the strove switch)

I found pros and cons in each one but i need some advise.

I shoot one time the Supernova and i like that feel robust but not to many parts in the market and i don't see any picatinny option for my TLR-2s.

In the past i had a Moss 500 but i find it very heavy in the weight, the good thing is are parts everywhere and is cheap, i saw today a tactical moss 500 in $450

I never shoot a Rem 870 and i like that you can found parts in Walgreens (everyware) but i don't know if is heavier than the Moss 500.

Please, any advise is very appreciated.

    thanks in advance.

I have 2 870's that are for hunting and a mossy 500 for home defense. They only thing I don't like on the 500 is the safety location.

Remington, Mossberg and Benelli in that order.
The Benelli will probably be the lightest but to me that is a moot point. I want the weight for recoil management.
Shitcan the pistol grip, they look cool but suck to shoot(just how big are your wrists anyway) plus you lose the ability for a good shoulder mount. You can always tuck the stock under your arm for mobility if need be.
If this is a HD shotty "spray and pray" from the hip is a poor tactic.
Saddle mount for the rail but shitcan the Eotech if you are concerned about weight.

    Mossberg.

They are tried and true design. I persoanlly love the location of the tang safety. The Mossberg should be lighter than the Remington as the Mossberg is made out of aluminium.

I have owned all three, plus a Mossy 590A1 and Maverick 88. The 870 is my bird gun, 500 for HD and the Nova I sold a long time ago. The nova action is junk IMO. I LOVE the 870 action and feel but the action release is in a goofy spot for me (left handed) and thats why I use 500 for HD. The 500 or 870 will both make a solid platform for HD. Lots of goodies available for either one.

My advice after having just gone through this, would be to find a shop that has a large selection of 18" barreled HD shotguns so you can fondle them all.

I found the Mossbergs to feel flimsy and cheaply put together (poor fit quality). They were lighter than the Remington 870 Tactical (ghost ring sights), but the 870 felt amazing to me. Very tight, smooth and pointed naturally for me whenever I shouldered it. I love the location of the safety and the action release on the 870, so thats what I went with.

If you get a pistol grip preinstalled, see if you can try one out. The shop I went to had a pistol grip Mossberg that I was unable to operate the action release. Even while looking down, I simply could not wrap my fingers around and operate it, because the pistol grip got in the way.

Plus for the Rem870 Tactical (81198) is that it comes with the picatinny rail for your Eotech, built in ghost ring sights (XS brand) and it has a plethora of parts online for it. As enticing as the Rem870 Synthetic 7rd is for $350, avoid it. It doesn't have a removable choke, whereas the Rem870 Tactical (81198) DOES have a removable choke (comes with the ugly "door breacher" thing). Also, the receiver isn't drilled for sights/rail, whereas the Tactical version comes factory drilled with rail/ghost rings installed.

I like the safety location. When having to switch strong side to weak side I can hit it with my thumb. Also in high stress no loading gate to snag my thumb while reloading.

I have had all 3 and have since sold all of them. I kept the Remington 870 the longest and trusted it unequivocally, but it was still a pump action that kicked like a mule. I sold it to my brother in law to keep it close by for when the zombies attack (too much walking dead for me too!)

I've since filled the "home defense shotgun" category with a Mossberg 930 SPX for 3-4x faster shots than my old pumps, but also so the wife can shoot it without getting knocked on her rear. It was only $200 more if you've not considered a semi-auto 12g yet.
