Okay, long story short. I'm working a case with some stolen Sony property that most people connect to ther internet to use, so I'm trying to get in touch with Sony to see if they will record the IP address if that device is conected to the internet again. I call Sony and tell them what I'm trying to do, and I ask them who I should send a subpoena to, to get the information I'm looking for. They tell me "we can't provide you any information over the phone"
I said, "I know, I wouldn't expect you to, I just want a phone number, maybe for your legal department so that I can get an address or a fax number so I can get a subpoena to you" ...
"I'm not allowed to provide you any information over the phone"
"I'm aware of that. As I stated, I am a LEO, and I'm trying to get in touch with your legal department. Microsoft has a special number for Law Enforcement to contact them, do you have something similar to that?"
"If you were Law Enforcement, you'd be able to get that information."
"... we don't exactly have a rolodex with the number for the legal department for every corperation in the world, I'm just asking for a phone number, or an address or a fax number to contact your company about a legal issue"
"I can't provide you any information over the phone"
"Well then can I have address to send my request to?"
"No."
HAHAHAHAH can you believe that shit? They acted like I was requesting a list of all the social security numbers for everyone who owns a Sony product in the USA. I just want a god damned PHONE NUMBER. HAHA. After 2 freaking hours (try to find contact information on Sony's website for thier legal department, good luck) of talking to different people (several calls) I finally get a guy who gives me the mailing address for thier legal department. Thinking I might be able to do this faster than snail mail, I did some more searching and found a phone number for that building (Sony Inc. in San Diego). I call them, and I ask for the legal department. Guy says "I need to know the persons name, we have over 2000 employees."
"Just anyone in the legal department will do fine"
"I have to have the persons name"
"I'm just trying to find out where I can send a subpoena to request some records from your company, does your legal department have a fax number?"
"The legal department should be able to provide you with that number"
"Great, patch me though to them please"
"I have to have the persons name"
"..."
"Thank you for calling Sony"
The conversation was longer than this, and by the end of it this guy and I are laughing at how jacked up this system is. Microsoft has a number that LEO's can call, and it has a convienient recording that provides the name and address to send all legal requests to. Now it's off to work, hopefully my efforts at the office will fare better.
