Default 308 AR - DPMS or Sig???

I am looking for input from people who have actually owned or do own 308's by Sig and DPMS.

I think I need either a Sig 716 or a DPMS Mk12 308. I don't want to get into the piston vs. DI debate (ok, maybe just a little). I am more interested in people's experiences with the quality from each manufacture, part interchangeability and availability, reliability, accuracy, and customer service if needed.

Each model has features I like. The Mk12 has a 18 inch barrel and ambi safety, which is a plus for me being left handed. It also has a button rifled barrel. The Sig is piston operated which I like the idea of, but with a 16 inch barrel. Also not sure, but I suspect the Sig's barrel is cold hammer forged, so I would think that the DPMS may be inherently a little more accurate.

I am not sure that the barrel length difference is that important in the accuracy department. I would loose a little FPS in the 16 vs. the 18 but not enough to be significant.

Both can use the Magpul 308 mags, which is nice. I have held off on getting a SCAR 17 due to short supply of mags and other spare parts.

This would be a range gun primarily, and maybe used for some white tail back East.

Thanks for any feedback or experiences anyone is willing to share.

    Those are your only choices?

I wouldn't worry about the barrel on either as both have just the run of the mill barrels that are not really anything to gawk at. If you think that a hammer forged barrel is horrible, I would ask you to shoot your AR10 next to an Hk 91... You're not really looking at anything special with either of those two (Sig & DPMS). Honestly, hold it up to your shoulder and see how it fits, go with the better. When you get into the AR platforms (either the 15 or 10), you will get a million different answers, none of which are wrong or right for the most part, just opinions, which shouldn't sway yours. Get what fits well as that is what you will shoot better with.

On a side note, the piston system is + for me.

I would also say to get this:

With SIG you have one source of replacement parts and many parts are proprietary.
    Something to consider.

You are probably the biggest variable between the two rifles.

Bert, aren't they all pretty much proprietary?

Are you going to run it suppressed? That was a deciding factor for me to get into the Sig716 Patrol (piston).

POF and DPMS get great reviews. If you want to pop for double your money, double your fun, Larue OBR.

My Sig716 shoots <1MOA, more like 3/4" with match ammo. It still shoots pretty damn good with PPU blaster. It's VERY consistent. I've shot it up to 600yd on steel and nearly as good as my 700P bolt gun.

When I first got it, it wouldn't cycle and had to go back to Sig. They fixed it promptly. Polished chamber, cleaned up gas port, and got a free trigger job and extra mag and a sweet little love note from the Smith. Top notch in my book.

There's one thing about it that bugs me and that is the rail mounting. There's a little wiggle in the free float that I've needed to shim to stop. I don't know that three's much they could do to remedy it as it's probably "within tolerance" but it's something that I can't tolerate without a fix.

If you can fondle and shoot each one, it will be easier to decide. There's probably one of each up in your neck of the woods, but if you want to drive until your ass hurts and shoot mine at BLGC some time, PM me.

P.S. I don't know how available they are as everyone seems to be out of stock, but Sig also makes the 716 Precision Marksman 20" http://sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDe...-marksman.aspx

I see an ambi safety on it too and they both have ambi mag release.

These were the 2 I had focused in on. I would love the POF or LRWC, but these 2 fit into the budget I have and had some features I liked.

I will check out the Armalites and see what they have to offer also.

Thanks for the input from everyone.

One question about this post, I see it was moved from GD to AR-15 Specific Forums\AR-10. But I do not see the AR-10 section if I am just browsing the AR-15 Specific section. Any idea whats going on?
