Yea, it doesn't give me much confidence in what it takes to be an NRA instructor.

Just saw the movie 'Killing Them Softly". One of the characters shows up to rob a place with a shotgun exactly like that, the barrel was shorter than the shell.

Not when I got certified - had to take a specific instructor course for each discipline - e.g. "Basic Pistol Instructor" is a roughly week-long course, it's not an "instructor course" followed by simply taking "basic pistol". Want to add basic rifle? Another "Basic Rifle Instructor" course must be taken. All instructor certifications include live fire requirements and supervising others during live firing.

At least when I did my cert back in 2005 - maybe they've gotten slack since then.

^^ That was my experience, too, a few years before you. Not saying it's the most stringent training by any stretch as evidenced by the video...but there is (or was) a firing qualification requirement. I had been a police firearms instructor for over 10 years (also an NRA certification) and was still required to get the "civilian" certification. Waste of time but there was no way around it.

There were some people in the instructor course with pretty much nill firearms experience, all got their certification. After that, taking any regular NRA course granted you the instructor label for the dicipline.
OK, they definitely dumbed down the curriculum, then. My condolences.

No awareness of his surroundings. Open concealed carry?

Fairly certain I could have had his gun and him be dead should I be so inclined..

Are you saying there's a law/ordnance or whatever about open carrying magazines?
