Well this one is one for the books...

Lieutenant Joshua Philip Yabut was arrested Tuesday night after hijacking a tank-like personnel carrier from a National Guard base in Virginia, and led authorities on a two-hour chase.

Yabut, who was reportedly under the influence of drugs when he hijacked the massive M577 vehicle, shared shots of his 60-mile run through Virginia while tweeting bizarre comments, all while the police were on his tail.

Yabut tweeted a picture of himself with his helmet on and his head outside the vehicle, while making a hand-sign. He also tweeted a short video clip from inside the vehicle.

Among other bizarre tweets during the 40-mile-per-hour chase Yabut also wrote to Twitter: 'where is this damn water buffalo' and 'all i wanna do is get an anime wife.'

And just hours before the bizarre incident, he tweeted 'thinking about putting my packet in tbh.'

Yabut was a Lieutenant with an engineering battalion of the Virginia Army National Guard at Fort Pickett, where the vehicle was hijacked from.

The chase began at 7.55pm, while the vehicle wound through Virginia for over 60 miles.

The vehicle was not armed, and is designed for mobile command posts. However, Yabut did have his service weapon on him, but it did not have ammunition in it, according to WTVR.

The soldier led police to Virginia's capitol of Richmond, and was heading through downtown straight toward the Capitol building.

Capitol police officers with combat-style rifles guarded the entrance to Capitol Square as a police helicopter shined a spotlight on the vehicle and police worked to stop traffic.

Stunned onlookers filmed the chase as dozens of police cars pursued the vehicle along Route 460, Interstate 95, and through the streets of Richmond.

At some points the vehicle topped speeds of 45 miles per hour, but fortunately no accidents were reported.

Twitter users compared the bizarre scene to something out of video game Grand Theft Auto.

At about 9.40pm the driver drove the armored vehicle onto a median and was surrounded by police.

The soldier got out of the M577 through the roof hatch, and clamored down.

He dropped to his knees, and then refused commands, so Virginia State Police tasered him.

He was first brought to the hospital, and then hauled to jail.

'The unit was conducting routine training at Fort Pickett when [Yabut] drove away in the armored personnel carrier,' Virginia National Guard spokesperson Cotton Puryear said, according to WTVR.

'The vehicle was not equipped with any weapons, but the soldier did have his personal weapon with him but had no ammunition,' Puryear said.

Yabut was assigned as the commander of the Petersburg-based Headquarters Company, 276th Engineer Battalion, and that he has more than 11 years of service, according to the Virginia National Guard.

He also served in Afghanistan from 2008 to 2009 with the Illinois National Guard

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — An Army National Guard officer charged with driving an armored personnel carrier off base while under the influence of drugs insisted Thursday he was ordered to do so as part of a training exercise and called the charges against him "completely bogus."

1st Lt. Joshua Yabut told The Associated Press he was first notified of the training exercise by his commander a week before he drove the vehicle away Tuesday evening from Fort Pickett. Yabut said he was later given the command in coded military language to conduct the exercise, which he said was aimed at gauging police response.

"I didn't want to do it, but I believed it was a lawful order, and as a commissioned officer I was required to do so," Yabut said.

Yabut, 29, of Richmond, Virginia, was arrested in downtown Richmond following a two-hour police chase. He spoke to the AP by phone from a psychiatric hospital. He was taken there Wednesday after he was arraigned on charges of driving under the influence of drugs, unauthorized use of a National Guard vehicle and evading police.



A. A. "Cotton" Puryear, a spokesman for the Virginia National Guard, denied Yabut's claim. He said there was no exercise to gauge police response.

"Lt. Yabut was not authorized by the brigade commander or anyone else to drive the armored personnel carrier off Fort Pickett to any location for any reason," Puryear wrote in an email.

Yabut said he was not under the influence of illegal drugs. He said the only drug he has taken recently is a low dose of Lexapro, which he said he was prescribed for anxiety after he returned in 2009 from a deployment in Afghanistan. He said the drug has never altered his behavior.

"I think the toxicology report will show that those charges are completely false, and I don't even know why I would be charged with that to begin with," he said.

A state trooper who is listed as the arresting officer wrote in court documents that Yabut had "glassy eyes" with dilated pupils, slurred speech and was "unsteady on his feet."

"Mr. Yabut had no idea where he was at that time," the trooper wrote. He also wrote that Yabut's dilated pupils "are indicative of opioid use."

Sgt. Keeli Hill, a Virginia State Police spokeswoman, said Thursday that she couldn't give specifics about what drugs Yabut might have used, saying an investigation was ongoing.



Yabut's lawyer did not respond to several phone messages and emails seeking comment.

The Guard said Yabut is assigned as the commander of the Petersburg-based Headquarters Company, 276th Engineer Battalion. He has more than 11 years of service, and was deployed to Afghanistan from 2008 to 2009 with the Illinois National Guard.

The armored personnel carrier, which drives on tracks like a tank, topped out at speeds of about 45 mph (70 kph) on its journey to the state capital. Police couldn't stop it, so they ended up escorting it, sirens blaring, before Yabut stopped and got out near City Hall.

Yabut said police shot him with a stun gun and set a dog on him before taking him into custody.

"I didn't just run in to an APC and drive it off," Yabut said. "It was prepped. It was prepared with 60 miles of fuel and soldiers assisted with the preparation."

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - 11 News has learned an El Paso County Sheriff's deputy has been arrested for trying to bring drugs into the jail during his shift.

Steven D'Agostino was booked into the El Paso County jail where he works. He's also charged with drug charges and official misconduct charges. Introducing contraband in the first degree is a Felony 4 charge. 11 News learned of his arrest Tuesday night.

According to the sheriff's office, D'Agostino has been employed with the Sheriff's Office since March 20, 2013, and was assigned to Floor Security at the Criminal Justice Center Jail.

D'Agostino will not be put in the general population he was guarding, he is expected to be segregated for his own protection.

He has been placed on leave without pay, pending termination.
