    Default Horrnady A-max bullet

I saw that horrnady made a load for the M1 Garand using that bullet. Has anyone hunted with it or know much. I've read it won't expand like a soft point

It's going to expand and fragment like it has a core of explosive material. I've spoken to a few who have used them hunting elk. Not a lot of penetration if it hits bone, lots of meat loss.
Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be.

Yep... A-max is a match bullet with a very thinly drawn jacket. Good for flying through the air... not so good on flesh and bone, particularly if driven fast. They instantly come apart like a varmint bullet. I've only seen one deer shot with one (30 cal 168 grain), and it made a big mess. It killed the deer, so I can't say it "failed", but you really want a bullet that will hold together better, retain weight and penetrate. That deer was just blown the heck up - lots of bloodshot meat.

In the old Hornady manual, it is listed as hunting / target. The new manual lists it as target only.

Nothing wrong with the 180 grain Accubonds for elk, or even an old soft point like the Sierra Gameking if you want to save some money...

I'm usig my 7mm elk hunting. I'm wanting to use my M1 for antelope. I saw those and thought it might be a good alternative. I need to.just buy some dies and reload

Antelope are tiny things. Nosler ballistic tips or Hornady SST are the two I would look at, both in the 165gr range.

I know. I just don't have time to reload anything for this hunt. I knew Hornady made those round for an M1 thought they may be okay to use

I would take the 7mm Rem mag then. Grab a couple of 150gr Fed Fusion boxes of ammo from Wally world and see how they shoot. They should work just fine as long as they group accurately from the gun.

I agree with these two, but I would also look at the Barnes TTSX. I have had stellar results with them on small size big game takes.

In 30 cal, they come in 150 and 130gr varieties. May come in others as well.
