I build furniture as a hobby. If I was able to pick it up, anyone can. I've built a variety of furniture with secret compartments and openings. I've even built a couple pieces on commission when I was a college student.

Having said the above, I'd advise against getting into woodworking as a hobby if you are uninclined to spend a lot of money. Whatever Tim K builds you as a professional, with professional equipment and years of experience, is going to be cheaper and better than anything you are likely to build yourself without either of the above.
Math is tough. Let's go shopping!

FYI for the DIYers, those magnetic locks he used appear to be baby proofing locks sourced from Babies-R-Us. I still have a few around the house protecting stuff from the kids and they are not cheap. They are handy until you loose the freaking magnet. Just be sure to be well aware of the mounting location or you will be all over the place looking for the lock.

I was thinking that a good thing to build with these same ideas would be a headboard for a bed. We're still using this headboard from an old waterbed from the 80's, because we like the storage and the cubbyholes. But a custom-made headboard with similar features AND several hidden secret compartments? THAT would be awesome!!! Hidden storage for handguns and long guns on the sides? I wouldn't know how to act.....

No one remembers what it was called, or anything about it? If it was posted on the internet it still exists out there somewhere.
