In case you guys aren't sick of me saying this yet:
When the average voter can vote themselves more free things at the expense of someone they'll never meet, why wouldn't they?
My Feedback

"I am a conservative. Quite possibly I am on the losing side; often I think so. Yet, out of a curious perversity I had rather lose with Socrates, let us say, than win with Lenin."

The Great Kazoo's Feedback

"But when it's time to fight, you fight like you are the third monkey on the ramp to Noah's Ark; and brother, it's startin' to rain."
Social/Moral issues are basically what the Dems have been running on for years...works for them.
The Republicans tried to keep this one mostly to the economy. But the everyday person doesn't know shit about the economy. So they vote instead on who is going to give the birth control pills for free.
So I have to ask:
If you believe that the freeloaders/47% are a.) too stupid to vote in the long-term best interests of the country over the short-term best interests of themselves, or b.) overwhelming the social welfare system with complacency and inflated expectations of the government dole...
Then why exactly are you against whomever is 'giving out birth control pills for free'?
In point of fact, why aren't you giving them out yourself?
...
The truth from the great unwashed middle of the American electorate, of which I fall in and which may well make me appear as a flaming liberal to some on this site, is that the Republican party failed to make the economic argument, and allowed the Democratic party to paint us as a bunch of change-resistant whiteys who wanted to take away freedoms from many of the minority subgroups that together form the bulk of the US electorate. This isn't about some universal truth or reality, it is about perception. And the best the Republican Party could come up to address this perception was a rich white guy who practiced a very different type of government than the one he preached in an attempt to get elected.
On the plus side, I now have four years of hope that if things get bad enough, I might see Jeb Bush stand a chance for the Presidency.
Math is tough. Let's go shopping!
Remember a particularly snarky guy saying that Republicans should be for not just free birth control but free on-demand abortions as a long-term strategy.
Do not endorse that idea, of course, but it made me laugh.
I have an awfully hard time believing that those that voted for Obama did so because they think he was the better choice for the economy. Unemployment is up, the deficit is up, the debt is up, inflation is up, etc, etc. If they voted for BO because they think those are good results then they aren't very bright. They voted for him for other reasons.
I don't know about you, but for the last month I have come home everyday to 6-12 mailers in my mailbox saying Romney wants to
make birth control illegal, or Romeny wants women to die due to pregnancy complications instead of getting an abortion or Romney bought/sold a company and is therefor at fault for a woman dying of cancer. I didn't get a SINGLE mailer saying Romney sucked at economics.
So if the Dems and their supporters spent their money sending mailers about abortion and birth control, do you really think they wanted this election to be about the economy? Nope. They wanted to make it about all these other "issues" to give the perception that the other guy hates women, or minorities, or the poor.
You are exactly right, it is all about perception.
The incumbent has done a shitty job with the economy...so instead of giving a guy with a better economic resume a shot at the job, let's just keep the same guy with nothing but a record of making it worse. Yeah, that makes sense.
So either a) the majority think higher inflation, debt, etc are indicators the incumbent is doing a great job with the economy or b) the other "issues" hold a higher priority in their minds.
I'm going with B. I woke up this morning to several of my more liberal minded friends on FB ranting and raving about how their vaginas are free from the tyranny of that Mormon, and that women's rights are secure! Hey look at this wonderful economic collapse all around us, good luck feeding yourself, but fuck it, go get pregnant and don't worry because you can still get an abortion!People are so fucking stupid.
