I always go by the combat load rule, 7 mags; 6 in carriers and one in the rifle. If im looking at how many mags do I need for a SHTF situation. I would say IMO 12 mags, that would give me 5 extra in my pack. Sidearms are totally different IMO and would say 2 in pouches and 1 in pistol, might have 5 more in the pack. Really id rather be light and properly armed then slow and weighted down and over armed.

I voted to combat load as well, but with current legislation making legal replacement a no go, maybe "2 is 1 and 1 is none," so double it or somewhere around there?

I still see little point in keeping more than you can reasonably carry (ever weigh 6 fully loaded pmags?) but that's under assumption you can replace one if you break it...
