As usual, a breaking story is an inaccurate story. Here's the latest update:

Man accidentally shot at Silver City store

SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRQE) - A 65-year-old man is still recovering after accidentally getting shot at an ATV shop in New Mexico.

Police say a worker at Copper Country ATV in Silver City was cleaning a gun when it accidentally went off, shooting a 65-year-old man.

He was airlifted to a hospital in El Paso.

Police have not said if they will arrest the worker who was cleaning the gun.
Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.

I'm still not understanding how it "accidentally went off" while cleaning. Clearing the weapon is supposed to be step #1 and performed in a "safe direction".

Pointing a gun in a safe direction would save a lot of pain on everyone's part.

Besides checking the chamber several times before disassembling, I know I'm not the only who places the ammo far, far away when cleaning guns.

Authorities say an employee at a New Mexico gun shop was unloading a handgun when he accidentally shot a customer in the back, wounding him.

This reminds me of a somewhat local (up North) gun shop where the clerk (who must have been a SEAL in a previous life given his attitude) berated me for sweeping my friends dick with a handgun I had checked (because he hadn’t) and had the slide locked back. Not 2 minutes later he was showing us a 12ga and blatantly pointing it at the guy next to us (again he hadn’t cleared it). Not justifying sweeping my friend but I know 100% (barring an act of god) there was no possible way there was going to be an AD/ND. This is a very busy store on a weekend so I don’t think it was physically possible to touch a weapon without sweeping someone.

I believe when these accidents happen, Cleaning=wiping it down with a cloth, never actually broken down. (they probably don't know how)

And why is it someone is always "cleaning" the gun. Why don't they say "randomly pulling the triggers of different guns", because that's what it seems like.
