How about the part where the dispatcher who know the guy is still in her apartment tells her to put the gun down and set it away from her?!? I told my wife that she puts down the gun as soon as the police who on are scene tell her to, not a second sooner...

A dispatcher REALLY told somebody to put their gun down during a HOME INVASION!? What freakin' retards. Seriously, how stupid can you be? The phone only comes out for me AFTER I am armed and hunkered down in a defensible position. "I live at 1234 Street Dr. My home is being broken into." Only after that, If I have time, I will tell them where in the home I am and what I am wearing, so the cops can ID me as the homeowner when they make entry.

Let me ask this. Is it the dispatchers fault that the woman in the closet didn't have her gun? If someone told you to put yours down during a home invasion would you do it?

i think there is some blame but the woman that put her gun down was an idiot. She had the advantage and by following that instruction she gave the attacker the advantage.

Well, that's true... But we gotta look at it a little deeper.

I'm going to assume she was younger, female, and in California. Given that set of variables I'm willing to guess that almost always that person would listen to what the police/dispatcher says. Even more so when scared out of their minds.

I'm also assuming she didn't have much in the way of training. I know none of us would put the gun down. But that's us.

This also makes me curious as to her own comfort level with the weapon. Again, look at the difference between the San Jose incident and the last one. Comfort level and location. Also, differing social standards for what's acceptable.

I don't want to start an Open Carry debate, but, the "social standards" thing comes into play there as well. While it might be totally acceptable in a rural area to open carry, in a heavily populated city it might be looked upon differently.

And for what it's worth, I don't agree with the dispatcher telling her to put the gun down. I think that was the wrong move.

I think your right JM. I also found it amusing that the woman in OK that killed the dude seemed like an old ranch woman. Her son said that all they had done was give her the nickel tour of the shotgun. I think it plays to her background that she had the werwathol to use it. She also sounded super cool throughout given the circumstances. She knew she didn't have to worry because she had a gun in hand.

Exactly. I was thinking, "She's gonna blast this dude..." the whole time.

I also noticed her say, "I don't want to kill him. But if I have to..."

I think that says a lot to the mindset you have to be in. No one WANTS to kill someone. But if the situation is "You or Them", it should always be them.
