Give your wife some brownie points. Lynn Minmay it is. The song itself is not karaoke although I'm sure there were probably some karaoke versions at anime conventions in the 80s and 90s. Unlike Ronin, I don't think it was poorly sung, the actual soundtrack and video don't have all the distortion in that YouTube cut -- it's hardly the quality of the anime J-pop on Kimagure Orange Road or Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex but I prefer it to the original Macross song in that sequence, "Zoom Zoom, My Boyfriend's a Pilot". The singer was also trying to emulate being a 13-year-old girl so I think intentionally tried to keep the tonal range high.
