KISS. Food, water, heat, light, security, shelter, first aid, sanitation, communications.
The details of each are up to you. Everything else is gravy.
Oh, and if you're planning for a sucking chest wound, forget the bag. You're going to have bigger problems.

He was just using the foil from the bag. The point was knowing what the right way looks like and being able to improvise if it's not available. The context of the class was wilderness first aid and getting back to civilization. The person has to survive the wound first, worry about infection later. The instructor was simply looking around the room to find something he could use in an emergency. Doritos bag was what he picked.
