I am looking for a scope in the 4x14 range which has the ability to dial the yardage on the elevation turret. I am debating between the Vari X III in 4.5x14x40 CDS or the Mark 4 LR/T 4.5x14x40. My questions are these: On the Mark 4, can you have the turret "Customized" like you can on the CDS? Or, if not, how do you know how many clicks to turn the turret for the yardage (completly knew to this game.) Any pros/ cons between these two scopes? This will be mounted on a Browning A Bolt in 300 WSM. Just looking to increase my range and confidence in the field.

Any help is appreciated. Currently I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x14x40 duplex reticle on there so this is all new to me.

You need to generate some dope for your load. There are multiple online ballistic calculators plus apps for smart phones. You'll need to know the bullet, muzzle velocity, and height of the center of the scope above the center of the bore (super precision not necessary). With that information, the software will spit out the number of "clicks" you need to get to various distances. You'll need all the same information for a custom turret.

Custom turrets are a waste of money if your intent is precision shooting. The atmosphere changes, your load changes, etc., and then your turret is no longer accurate.

The VX-3 is fixed parallax which will make it much harder to shoot accurately unless your head position is perfect every time.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider the VX-3.

Thanks for the info, that makes sense. I am only using this gun for hunting that's why I debate the VX 3 but I see your point. I will look harder at the Mark 4.

I missed the part about it being for hunting. Not being a hunter myself, everything I said my be irrelevant.

Personally, I still wouldn't own a scope in that power range with fixed parallax.
