MERCER, Pa. — A man’s handgun went off while he was holding it as he got into his truck in the parking lot of a western Pennsylvania gun store Saturday and the shot killed his 7-year-old son, authorities said.
Joseph V. Loughrey, 44, was getting into the truck when the 9 mm handgun discharged, wounding Craig Allen Loughrey in the chest, according to state police. The boy died at the scene at Twigs Reloading Den in East Lackawannock Township, 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. Store owner Leonard Mohney said the boy was shot in the parking lot, but that he didn’t see what happened.

Investigators said Loughrey told them he didn’t realize there was a bullet still in the chamber. “This happens all too often where people think the gun was empty,” Lt. Eric Hermick told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Joseph Loughrey was questioned by state police, who said he was cooperative and distraught. The shooting is being investigated as an accident.
Messages left for the coroner’s office and at a listing in Loughrey’s name were not immediately returned.

This shit drives me nuts! Guns don't just go off. This article should read, stupid asshole that doesn't know to keep his finger off the trigger and the gun pointed in a safe direction kills his own by failing to observe standard safety practices.

I am at a loss for words every time I read or hear about one of these scenarios. These sorts of things should never happen, period. With the exception of true mechanical failure, there are no accidents with firearms, just negligence.

Dick beater off the trigger unless you intend to fire the weapon.

i have tried to make it a tried and true habit of never touching the trigger of my weapon, it seems to automatic now. that being said i cant imagine the father's emotion at this time.

I still don't see how you pull the trigger on the gun inside a bag by accident?

Where did you see anything about the gun being "inside a bag"? All I saw in the article was that he was "holding it". I'm visualizing him climbing into his truck and reaching for the console or armrest to pull himself in, with the gun in his hand, finger on the trigger, and his son climbing in the other side, right in front of the muzzle.

And I'd still bet $100 that he "cleared the chamber" first, and then dropped the magazine second. Thereby loading a second round. I'm not familiar with how many modern semi-auto pistols will fire without a magazine in them, but I know that some damn sure will, and some won't.

Complacency kills again. Like Byte said - this man is in a living hell now. I know for a fact, if I did something this stupid my wife would shoot me and I would be thankful for it.

Anyone who does raise their hand shouldn't be allowed to have guns and/or kids... Probably both. I never point my gun at anyone unless I intend to shoot them, so far that number is 0 (in the civilian world).
