Through all of the horror in CT last week and all the knee-jerk, snap-judgment, emotional reactions on how to address the situation, it occurs to me that the single biggest problem in all this mess is that people actually think there's a way to "fix" things. So when "they" ban "guns" and the next school massacre is carried out with a garden sprayer, gasoline and a zippo (ala the case in Denver recently), will "they" then try to ban garden sprayers? After that, when someone carries a small diesel/fertilizer canister encased in a nail/ball-bearing cover into a movie theater, will "they" try to ban or severely limit the access to Scotts and #2 diesel? THEN, when someone flies a small twin-engined Baron or Seneca into a Saturday/Sunday afternoon football crowd, will "they" advocate banning light aircraft/recreational flying?
Where does it stop? Where is the balance between the acceptable and the unacceptable? Where/when/how will we finally come to the conclusion that SHIT HAPPENS! We cannot control every single, little, minute detail of EVERYTHING. There hasn't been an original thought come out of Washington since, well, just since. There's no common sense, no logic, no real analysis of a situation other than "Do SOMETHING" regardless of whether or not it might be effective and I don't expect that will change after the events in CT on Friday. This is not to say we shouldn't try, but let's make sure we don't make the situation worse by further enabling the terrorists....
Those kids in CT, Columbine, Aurora, VA Tech, etc., were our kids, my kids, and those things just shouldn't happen..........but they do and will no matter what we do. There are terrorists who scheme to deliver pain and hurt and unimaginable suffering all over the world, some of them right here in our little hometowns across the country. And they are TERRORISTS, not "gunmen" or "activists" or "shooters" or whatever else the media gins up, who only have to be lucky once. They will ALWAYS have the advantage until some kind of Orwellian technology comes along that is able to single them out and keep them from doing wrong (the concept in the movie "Minority Report" comes to mind, but that's about as believable at this point as the WH's position on Benghazi). But until that time comes, they're terrorists and should be dealt with accordingly. Only fools bring a knife to a gunfight (just an adage, not necessarily an a advocation, but there's a very poignant message there).
In order to have any sense of liberty and freedom, a certain amount of risk is inherently implied. We can attempt to pass all the warm, fuzzy, feel-good legislation Feinstein and her minions can dream up, but when it doesn't work, then what? One could easily blame the politicians for passing legislation that doesn't work. (Oh, wait, tried that....boon-f*kin'-doggle of biblical proportions.....back to square one.)
When is the country going to figure out that some things just can't be "fixed?" Liberty and tyranny cannot coexist.
