I go to the dealership for my work. It's all warranty work though. I never actually see the guy that works on my car.

I don't tip at fast food places, ever. I sometimes will tip a restaurant when I pick up food, but no more than $2.00.

Now I feel like a jerk dwalker.

My own rule of thumb is if I have personal interaction, I tend to tip. Most mechanics never interact with the customer, but some, especially independents do. When I get tipped these days its when I have gone above whats expected for the customer.

I had one guy give me a $100 bill for staying all night to fix his truck.He was going cross country when his truck broke down,and had to make it to where he was going at a certain time.
We diddn't have the part and the closest one who did was 3 states away.So off I drove to pick it up and put it in.
I knew what it was like to be brokedick halfway through your trip-no fun...
