    Default New to reloading...

I just bought a Lee Classic 4 hole turret press and a set of Lee .223 dies. I'm going to stay with all the same brand of components for now until I get more experience. Winchester for now. I've trimmed the brass (1.760"), deburred it and chamfered it like I should and started to set my dies up. The problem I'm having is after I set up the bullet seating die to the OAL I want (2.223"), the next bullet I seat goes further in the case. Not by to much, but I can't get the OAL I want. The bullets are 55gr FMJBT. The die is locked down so I know it's not moving on me and even after I reset the stem it happens again. And, every now and then I hear a clicking noise just as the bullet starts to seat. Are these dies junk, the bullets of not to high quality or am I doing something wrong?? Can anyone give me some advice please??

What is the difference between what you want and what you get??

you're first problem is that junk lee stuff. I know I have the same stuff bought a lee progressive 1000 and it was the worst mistake I made should have bought blue. I would pull the seater stem out and inspect for burrs? or some thing stuck in the bore. lee uses a floating bullet seater

I don't think your dies are the problem. Is the sound your hearing a "click" or a "thud". If its a thud, you are probably overcamming the press, which is easy to do on some presses.

Many times a slight variation is because of the bullet. Even if you try to seat the bullet so the case lip centers the cannelure the next bullet many times will not. If you measure the length of your bullets you'll find they vary in oal themselves. This is common. Best you can do is shoot for an "average" that is what length you want. Or adjust the seating die each and every time you load a cartridge.

And there is a reason why Lee equipment is so much cheaper then everybody else's. <wink>
