Default Jon Hammer, still jailed in Mexico

I'm not sure why once again, the only media outlet talking about this is Fox (just like Benghazi), but this one hits a little closer to home. I'm sure a lot of you have heard about this, and about what is not being done, but an inactive US Marine has been jailed in Mexico after attempting to bring an antique shotgun across the border. He had USBP's permission, they said it would be fine to bring into Mexico, he registered it, and just after crossing the border was arrested and detained by Mexican authorities. It's a shame that next to no one in the administration is doing a damn thing to get this guy released on these bogus charges. If it were me in charge, I would be pressuring the Mexican government... but this is probably going to go down as the Administration that leaves Americans out to dry.

Wait, he's still in prison in Mexico? You've got to be kidding. How do we just leave these guys to rot?

Remember Amir Hekmati? The Marine sentenced to death in Iran? I heard they overturned the death-sentence, but he too is still rotting in a foreign prison, forsaken by us.

Why would the US Border Patrol have *any* legal authority to tell someone what they can bring *INTO* Mexico? We sure as hell do not let Mexican authorities determine the legality of items brought into the United States.

While it sucks he's in jail, I think he screwed up badly.

Amir Hekmati death sentence overturned. But yes, he is still in jail. State Department should be working on these cases, but I think it is still reeling from the Benghazi incident. Last I heard Secretary of State was suffering from a traumatic brain injury. A hundred years ago, we would have just sent in Marines!

Unpossible. One must first have a brain to sustain an injury of this nature.

At first I thought this guy was an idiot but after looking at the facts he did nothing wrong. The family has been told by the state dept that there is nothing that they can do and that idiot carney when asked said he doesn't know anything about it. This shit needs to get resolved soon

I bet if Obama or Hillary visit the jail, they would let him go home with them. Sometimes I wish Mexico was part of the US, so I could go metal detecting for gold there. In fact I think every time we invade a country and liberate it, make it a state! If we are going to shed American blood, we should at least gain territory and resources. Screw world opinion...

Both sides check what you are bringing across, north or south. The Border Patrol checks those things when you exit the country. It's no different than them checking cars for cash as you travel south. You need to declare firearms when you cross the border. It's our attempt to stop gun running...(I know, I know, Fast and Furious, I won't get into the hypocrisy) He declared it in the US and he moved on to file the proper paperwork with the Mexico authorities. They arrested him while he was following the law declaring the gun. The family got a call demanding money when he was arrested. It is plain and simple an extortion attempt. And abhorrent that our government hasn't got the guy out.

It is stupid for anyone to try to bring a gun into Mexico. Even if technically they are following Mexican law...we all know they don't follow their own laws. But his first mistake was going to Mexico in the first place. That said, legally he did nothing wrong, the Mexican authorities are attempting to extort him and his family. It is our government's duty to get him out.

Yes. They get lucky and don't run into a corrupt Mexican official.
