Default Hey computer gurus...antivirus advise needed??

So I've boiled my decision down to two brands, Bitdefender and Avast. I'm lookin at the paid versions. Of the two, which would you choose and why. Looking at the Bitdefender Total Security and the Avast Internet Security. I'm not a computer guy and besides a few differences of the two, I don't know which is better. Avast is having a holiday sale 50%off and Bitdefender is about double price since there is no sale. Appreciate your feedback

I've been happy for many years with Avast's free virus software. I have put it on about a dozen different computers over the years. Not a one suffering a virus infection.

I've used Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials. I don't see a need to pay for AV software.

    AVG free edition.
What is my joy if all hands, even the unclean, can reach into it? What is my wisdom, if even the fools can dictate to me? What is my freedom, if all creatures, even the botched and impotent, are my masters? What is my life, if I am but to bow, to agree and to obey?

I really don't either but the spousal unit wants the paid versions for protection with online shopping and other crap. I really don't know computers other than the keyboard and screen are essentials

I like Avast enough to pay for it. Have been for years and am very happy with it. It runs your browsers in a sandbox by default.
