Looking for an inexpensive HD shotgun. Recommendations? I see some inexpensive ones at big-5...Remington and Mossberg...

Can't go wrong with either one. I own three Remingtons, and I have shot Mossy's a number of times, other than the placement of the safety, There's not that much of a differance in quality IMO.

I’ve owned the Mossberg 500 and 590. Both were good guns no problems at all.
You may all so want to look at the Winchester 1300. This is the one I use for the home now. I don’t know what there are going for now, but I don’t remember it being much more then the Mossberg.

Just a heads-up... I've often heard the Win. 1300 as a viable option to the other two also, but it's been discontinued for a few years now. Still plenty out there used of course.

If you can't stop the threat with 8 rounds, what makes you think 9 is going to do any good?

18.5 barrel, the magazine that fits correctly (not sticking out 4inches further) and practice, practice practice.

Any opinions on auto loader vs. pump?

semi-auto's are "faster", and "easier", but there's more $hit to go wrong.

Pumps have a more complex manual of arms and require more practice. (but with practice can be insanely fast), and have less stuff to go wrong. Like a revolver, you just keep pumping if it doesn't go off.
