People pull that me with all the time. They come in to look at something, come back a few days later when it's sold and ask "what did it sell for?"

I feel like leaving the price helps give a reference for what the market price of an item is. This, plus looking at how long the item took to sell will generally give a good idea of what to ask for an item that you might not know the worth of.
A seller is free to do whatever they want though I guess, and like someone else mentioned, the asking price often isn't the sold price.
