Default a few questions i ask the anti's

    1. do you propose that all items that are in place stay in place or would you outright ban these items ?
    2. would collectors of such items be paid for them or would you just make them turn them in ?
    3. would police and military have to turn in theirs too ?
    4. would you ban the use of guns at embassies located in the us and would you ban the use of them abroad at ours?
    5. would those in elected office loose the armed guards and have to live like the rest of us ?
    6. what would you do to assure the public that all the guns are out of the hands of criminals ?
    7. how would you keep guns out of the country ?
    8. what assurance would you give the public that we would not be invaded and no terrorist actions would happen on our door step ?
    9. do you think protest against the government would go as peacefully if they knew that the crowd could not arm themselves?

they never have good answers to or their answers are easily shot down

Muzzle devices, adjustable stocks, pistol grips, barrel shrouds, and other cosmetic features... if all of these had been completely banned, i.e. removed entirely from the country by use of a magic wand, which single or mass murder would have been avoided or mitigated?

I just put it back on them and ask them to explain to me how their proposal ( such as gun registrations, AWB, etc.) will stop any murders from occurring. I assure them that what happened in Conn. was unthinkable and that I am %100 behind a solution but chiseling away at our rights while still not providing a solution to the problem is bullshit.

Once you make them think about the effectiveness of their ideas they don't have much to stand on and realize quickly that they are just regurgitating what they heard on the news. Mostly though I don't even broach the topic. It's like talking politics or religion.

Yep- turn it back- just get all smarmy and condescending like Willy Wonka... "Oh, please continue to elaborate on how criminals obey laws?"
"There is no news in the truth, and no truth in the news."
"The revolution will not be televised... Instead it will be filmed from multiple angles via cell phone cameras, promptly uploaded to YouTube, Tweeted about, and then shared on Facebook, pending a Wi-Fi connection."
