Go to Consumer Reports Mike and see what their top pick is. It is rarely Dyson. When ours pooped out on us 3 years ago I did and it recommended a Eureka Dirt Devil. Picked one up at WallyMart for about 150.00. It has served very well and I have 4 cats and 2 dogs.
You will find a bag type model actually gets things cleaner than a bagless.

I have a dyson dc33 (i think). Works great, but the animal has the removable brush to make it easier to get the critter hair out. I got it on black Friday for $250.

Just got a Dyson on Black Friday - That thing is amazing. Filled the canister just doing the area rugs on the first floor, that is how bad our old vacuum was (we vacuum the rugs once a week).

Another satisfied Dyson owner here. Got a DC17 Animal almost 10 years ago and it's still going strong.

Me too, I think I am on my 3rd. But at $40 each who cares. I would like to get a nice one some day though.

Go to a vacuum shop and buy used. I got a bagged Hoover that was AWESOE for $200. just like bert said, it picked up everything. Because of the bag, nothing got out, so you didn't have that vacuum smell. It was very light, but super loud. Life time warranty on the motor. It sucked up a paper clip and wrecked everything that wasn't the motor and was going to cost $200 to fix. I took it back to the vacuum shop and he traded me over to a Dyson at no money out of pocket. Dyson is pretty good but is way heavier and fills up FAST! Also, the lackey at the Vacuum store must have cleaned the Dyson and left the filters wet because it smells moldy.

I did this after going through buying a Chinese $200 bagless at Walmart that started to crap up after one year. You can buy a refurbished one at those independent vacuum places for $20 that will last six months to a year. I'll never pay $200 for a vacuum again unless it is a used $800 Hoover like I had before. Vacuum shop is where it's at!

Did someone here say "Buy Once, Cry once" ?

By the way, IslanderMyk, I don't think Schmidt & Bender makes vacuums...

We have had a 2nd hand Kirby for a WHILE. After 15-20 years I rebuilt the motor and replaced the footswitch. Still was able to get parts.
    ...I LIKE that.
