I'm going to use the AR as an example but this applies to other rifles as well. If you have what the rest of the country would call a standard setup with a pistol grip, flash hider, and/or an adjustable stock you can't drop a magazine at the touch of a button. A tool is required. When I started the only thing to do was totally fix the mag with a set screw through the button and top load. Then along came the bullet button which was essentially and mag release button with a housing around it. You stick a bullet or a pen or anthing that would fit in the hole. That thing was your "tool." I had a gate latch before I went "featureless" which is a whole other long story.

The funny thing is that it made mag changing almost as easy as a standard button while sticking to the law 100%. Of couse that's always trumped because someone participating in illegal behavior can replace it a minute or two before they go out since it isn't built into the lower.
