This is what I have. It holds 8 mags plus 4 pistol mags and I added an I-F-A-K and a blade. Simple, not too expensive and a little room to add.

I also have a GI vest with an I-F-A-K and 6 mags worth of holders, with lots of room to add more stuff. I think I paid less than $50 for that rig with the I-F-A-K on Ebay.

This would be something i would want to use for training classes, at the range, and just while out shooting. I don't want to look tacticool, or mall ninja. I don't know a lot about gear, but i know i don't want a full chest setup. Just something that goes over the shoulders, and holds a decent amount of mags around the waist area.

    Suggestions?
    You may have a problem there. To some if you don't put your mags in your pants pocket then you tacticool. I would not care what others think. The gear as a reason for being there. That being said... you don't need to have 12 mags and 50lbs extra hanging on you. Most SWAT teams in this country only have a total of 4 AR15 mags on them, do you need more then that for a class or going to the range? No. As for what kind to get...I think you should rethink the chest rig. Shoulder bags just don't work that well, as a back up their OK, but trying to ues them a your main mag supply. I think you will find them hard to get in to on the move, they move around to much. If you still want to go down this route then I would go with one of these, or something like them;

+1 By the very fact that we are not Military or LE the use of any type of system will make you look like a mall ninja. That being said, accept it, move on and train with your gear. A bandoleer will not be stable while on the move. Your gear needs to reflect what you plan on using it for. If you are unsure and only get one peice, then it needs to fulfill all possibilties, at which point you will be unable to move under the weight. Start off with a simple chest rig or plate carrier and add to it what you need.

Or, you can use a 5.11 vest. It will get you through a carbine course and not look to out of place.

check the second article down, the suspenders one.

If I was going to choose a belt, I'd either want a totally custom one, from say John Willis (SOE gear) or David Bosen (Coyote Tactical). If I was buying off the shelf, I'd go with SpecOpsBrand for the belt because then you can move the MOLLE/PALS panels around and add/subtract panels as needed.

I have articles on these items as well if you'd like to see them.

Interesting. I suppose anything on a civi is going to look "mall ninja/tacticool" to a casual observer. I was browsing through arfcom's gear **** thread in the Armory, and some people (the non military ones) had some serious gear. I wasn't interested in all that. I don't need armor, i don't need kevlar, i'm not looking to deploy here or anything lol.

I like what westy1970 posted, something simple, but functional. But at the same time, KellyTTE brings up the good point, i only really need the ability to carry a few mags on me for my purposes. This stuff isn't cheap, and since i can't see most of it in person/action, it's tough to make a decision.

Found a vendor on arfcom selling this, looks simple, what do you guys think of this?

Looks good, I'm not a huge fan of either multicam or acu, but if its from a reliable vendor then it might work well.

I also will put up a standing offer, anyone that wants to see/use/roll around in any of the gear that I have, I'm happy to help (here or at range time with me). I also have an airsoft AR here for FoF and so forth. Its a POS but it'll give you an idea.

This is great. I have 20 year using this type on gear, and I have see alot of changes. For what it's worth, this is what I think you and any other non mil or LEO should have for classes, TEOTWAWKI... Start with a chest rig like you found. Then if you feel you need more gear get one of the new battle belts and a drop leg for your pistol. Then get a small backpack for extra gear, not to big, a 3day pack is fine.

    P.S.
One last thing, Never say never to body armor. You don't have to be in combat to shot by accident, and a VOK is a must for any shooter no matter what you are doing. What you have picked out, and what I have said here, will fit over body armor if you get some down the road.

Thanks for the replies fellas, this thread has been great.

I think i'll give that rig i posted a shot. I'm going to grab it in tan, i'm not a huge fan of those colors either.

I think for plinking, practice, classes ect that rig should meet my needs.

What other gear do you guys have/suggest (KellyTTE)? I wouldn't mind a good bug out bag, or a nice pack for hiking/carrying range gear. I Really only want functional gear. As i mentioned, i'm not in the military, and won't ever be so all gear is geared for personal use. I don't want to be "that guy" who shows up with kevlar at the range and looks like i just roped in off a blackhawk helicopter lol.

Well, a lot of this is personal preference I like having various platforms for various situations. I have a BH tactical go bag thats 'sorta' resembles a briefcase, I also have a Maxpedition manbag for hiking, etc, etc.

At the VERY minimum, I try to carry at least 1 additional magazine for each weapon, 1 trauma kit, 1 extra bandage, a less lethal option like OC, and a method of restraint (theres a quick 550 cord trick that takes a 3' piece of paracord and 3 seconds to make field expedient handcuffs). Even when I go to the range or a competition, I always have a med kid ON me or within a yard or so.
