Pre WWII fringe experimentation had started on the possibilities of what could be done with post hypnotic suggestion. This gave rise to the cold war paranoia that the USSR had planted sleeper cells throughout the western hemisphere who were unaware they were themselves time bombs merely waiting to receive magic signal that would set them in motion.
