Default Newbie help here with 6.5 Grendel

I have an M&P Performance center gun in .223. Will the standard .223 mags cycle the 6.5 grendel? I understand the capacity is diminished but I have an opportunity to buy a nice 6.5 grendel from Sabre Defence (Now defunct I think but it's a NICE gun) but I want to know if I can use my standard AR mags in it with the new round. Thanks!

Oh- is it a better round than the 6.8 or .300 Blackout for hunting? Looking to hunt antelope and pigs with it mostly- my M&P I will use for Coyotes and small stuff. I have big guns for big game- just looking for antelope and pigs. Thanks!

Wrong thread, but yes 6.5 Grendle will. BUT it won't feed reliably unless it has the correct mag follower. Which can be purchased at some places. C-Mags I believe sells them. Once it gets down to the last rounds, they will start to have trouble feeding.

Thanks! Any reason not to buy the Sabre defence gun?

Sabre Defense is out of business, and so is C Products, although you can still find CProducts stuff here and there.

The 6.5 is a beast, and is capable of taking every game animal in North America I can think of.

300BLK is OK for brush hunting deer sized game, pigs, etc. as long as your shots are less than 200yds

No experience with 6.8, but it is a little annoying they have changed the loadings -SPC and SPC2- and some guns will not like the hotter rounds.

My choice is the 300blk for deer out to 200 yds and the 6mmx45 for deer/antelopes out slightly further. If I really feel the need to take a 400yd shot on a speed goat thats what the 308 bolt gun is for.

As I was retarded this last weekend and left my 5.56 magazine at home during a range outing, I do have experience going the other way (using a Grendel mag to feed 5.56). It didn't work. Not only is the follower different, but the space between the lips is wider to accommodate the wider case of Grendel. I'm pretty sure you can't use 5.56 mags to feed Grendel, but I may be mistaken.

There a quite a few bullets in 6.5 that would meet your needs for pigs and goats, so that shouldn't be a problem. I would have serious thoughts about taking a moose or brown bear with it though! 8)

Sabre Defense - I have no experience, sorry.

What about just putting a 6.5 upper on my M&P, and getting some mags? Is that a viable option?

Of course. Nothing wrong with that.

None what so ever. My upper is Sabre. Great rifles.

I have all 3. 6.5 Grendel, 300 Blk Out, and 6.8 SPC. They all have a spot in my heart. 6.5 great long distance + knock down power. 300 BKO .308 knock down power with fair distance. 6.8 SPC is a .270 cal bullet. good for hunting and long distance.

Most defiantly a great one to considder. The only upper on the market right now that I know of is Alexander Arms, but as with every thing there backed up in the production.

It was never "looking" to build it, it was decided. It was a "this is the most expensive damn AR i have ever built, and I have to get it part by part" situation. My desired handguard just came in stock at Midway recently and I ordered it, just shipped a few days ago (damn backlog). I had been waiting for that notification for a while.

I had a completely custom barrel cut and reamed, my twist rate, my profile design, my gas port dimensions, my material and all factors done how I wanted. Had the chamber reamed with the exact bolt for all of my specs, and hand fitted to the lugs for awesome lock up. The Barrel finally got done Just after X-Mas (16 week wait since ordering) and is en-route here.

Once the last pieces get here, everything is off to my good family friends at Galley Graphics for hydrographic printing in digital desert camo (the lower is already printed, they did it when they did the FFL transfer for me), then its getting assembled. Maybe a month to six weeks out at this point. Still waiting on a bolt carrier... have the bolt taken care of but can't find a carrier to put it in. Worst case I'll pull another carrier and swap my bolt into it for a time being.

I'm also buying a used but never taken out of the home, top-o-the-line Schmidt Bender from another forum member to top it off (will also use that on my 300WM for this years Competition Dynamics / Snipers Hide 24 hour challenge).

    I really cannot wait.

    The Build:
    PSA Lower
    DD LPK
Armalite A2 Buffer Tube / Spring / Rifle Buffer
Timney 3lb skeletanized competition trigger (playing with some springs to see if I can get it closer to 2lbs and still reliable, unknown yet)
    KNS Anti-Walk pins
Rainier Arms Ultra Match stripped upper (guaranteed to within .0003 perpendicularity parallelism and flatness, typical is .003)
Ergo Deluxe Grip with palm shelf
    Magpul PRS Stock
Custom Barrel and Bolt, 24" mostly-bull profile, 416R Stainless Steel, match grade barrel, 3R polygonal rifling at 1:9.25 twist
Midwest Industries 15" SS Free float extended rifle hand guard
    Surefire .308 Muzzle Brake
Midwest .925 Low Profile Gas Block
    LaRue LT107 30MOA Rings/Mount 34mm
Schmidt Bender 5-25x56 PMII Mil-Mil with P4Fine Reticle
    AccuShot Atlas BiPod
    AccuShot Rear Monopod

Where possible, everything was purchased in FDE so any scratches wont show through the hydrographics. Black pieces got/get multiple coats of high-temp, high-quality FDE paint from a gun in an updraft booth before hydrographics applied.

All said, it will be WAY more expensive than any AR I have ever owned before. So it has taken a while to piece together. But it was what I wanted, and I will be sure to stretch the legs out a good deal on it.

Sorry to thread-jack there for a minute.
