I read the article at another news hub last Thursday, and there was more to it.

The bill is retro active to Bush and it was originally a service that was provided but was stopped to cut costs. So this is not new, Obammy didn't create it, he just reinstated it same as his raises, for fellow treason club members..........

In a time of hurting economy, he keeps unstopping the money for goberment.

Details are kind of funny; covers presidents until they die, children of presidents until they are 16, and spouses of presidents until they get divorced.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but don't all ex-presidents get a SS detail for life?

I wish I could find the article I had read, they use to get it for life then that was cut before Bush was in office. They got secret service to a point then they had to pay out of pocket for private security or something? Now it is back to get it for life.

I did some follow up on this news article ...He basically just re-enacted the old law from 1965.

I copied this from the ss website.

How long do former presidents receive Secret Service protection after they leave office?

In 1965, Congress authorized the Secret Service (Public Law 89-186) to protect a former president and his/her spouse during their lifetime, unless they decline protection. In 1997, Congress enacted legislation (Public Law 103-329) that limits Secret Service protection for former presidents to 10 years after leaving office. Under this new law, individuals who are in office before January 1, 1997, will continue to receive Secret Service protection for their lifetime. Individuals elected to office after that time will receive protection for 10 years after leaving office. Therefore, President Clinton will be the last president to receive lifetime protection.

Not a huge concern for me... this is my security for life:

As long as no one makes any laws that limits or restricts that... Honestly, you have to give the man credit, he's smart enough to know how hated he is and the second he is no longer under SS protection he's at great risk from some crazy person that doesn't fear the repercussions.

Formers can be some boring details. Plenty of odd stuff goes on. Not quite Driving Ms. Daisy, but close.

As someone above posted, this was in the works for a while. It wasn't specifically for the current President, but he will benefit from it, as will W.

The number of people who get USSS protection has been creeping upwards now for the last several administrations. Some of these people would be hard to pick out of a crowd, much less be targets for violence. Usually the Secretary of DHS designates who gets protection based on a request from the WH.

In the grand scheme of government waste, the USSS budget is relatively small. I personally would like to go back to pre 1865 style protection for our elected leaders, but that won't happen.

    Be safe.

I dunno... with the movie theater inside the WH now, it might actually be feasible to go back to the old days...

There has been a movie theater in the WH since the Kennedy administration. They still get first run, basically whatever the First Family wants whenever they want it for viewing. Seats about 35 people. The bowling alley is only four lanes and mostly used for storage, and hasn't been used in years. The indoor pool was repurposed as the West Wing press lobby.

Edit: Disregard, my point has been made already. Should read the whole thread before posting...
