Home for a Cat

Not sure if this should be in the General Discussion forum, not trying to sell a cat, just find a home for one. I think there’s a bunch of cat loving folks that frequent this site so I thought I’d try for some assistance.

We’ve tried everything we can but it’s come time to find a new home for this Calico. Her name is Lilly, she’ll be 8 yrs old next month and we’ve had her since she was just a few weeks old. You have to understand the Calico cat and their unique attitudes before you think about giving one a new home. She’s friendly on her terms and will curly up on your lap to rest but doesn’t just like being picked up. Would not recommend this cat for houses with youngsters that don’t know better or for someone who wants a cat who greets you when you get home from work… this is not her. She avoids one of our other cats, constantly picks fights with the other one, and pretty much leaves our dog alone. On the plus side, she isn’t one of those cats that crawl all over you constantly for attention and she does a terrific job of keeping the rodents out of our house. From what I understand these are fairly common traits to the Calico.

Now, the WHY. I would not recommend this cat for a house with another cat, that’s pretty much the reason we’re trying to adopt her out. She doesn’t get along with other cats and has a bad habit of thinking she needs to mark territory (pees). This issue only started when we got the two “new” cats, and I suspect it’s directly related to Calico’s (or at least this one) being territorial and unfriendly towards other cats.

It’s difficult to find a good home for older cat so we’re also trying to get her in to an adoption group that does not put cats ”down”, and I thought I’d take a shot that someone here may have interest. Not asking for any money for her but will ask to talk for a while to make sure you know what you’re getting.

She is absolutely beautiful. What a shame. I wish I could take her but I've got five cats already and that wouldn't work for her. Maybe you could just give me the two new cats instead

I couldn't tell from your post if you've already found an organization to take her but we've adopted from both Angels With Paws and Every Creature Counts and neither place puts animals down.

I'll poke around and see if anybody I know wants Lilly. Good luck and I hope you find her a peaceful place soon.

It's a complicated story around the other two cats, and we've thought of that as well, but this is really our best solution based on circumstances. I'll pass those two names along to my wife as she's the one working on the shelters aspect. I appreciate the input and you keeping your ears open for anyone interested.

How many liter boxes does you have.

We've had up to three of them in our first attemps at fixing the peeing issue, but down to two now. Didn't seem to matter how many we had.

I know it isn't what you want to hear, but keep trying. Try harder. You had a cat in your home and it was happy. Then you fucked up its entire world with two more cats and you're kicking that cat out? Not fair, man!

How long have the 2 new cats been around? The last time we made the mistake of bringing another cat in, it took 2 god damn years to get it sorted. It wasn't fun, but we created the problem and we saw it through. And I don't mean to play the moral high-ground here. I'm just wondering if there isn't more that can be tried or done. Do you exercise the shit out of the calico? Do you try to get them all to play together? That aroma crap (didn't help us, but who knows)?

They're fickle creatures and they can't be bent to your will. But you can outsmart them. Or at least I hope you can. Or write-in to that goofy son of a bitch on TV that runs around with the guitar case full of cat toys. Regardless, if you can't find a home and you send it to a shelter at that age, you're most likely either putting it in the 'pen' for life, or you're putting it on death row. Someone could always adopt it from one of those places and put it in a shelter that DOES euthanize. Or they just let it go.

Can't aruge with you there; it's not fair for the cat, but you don't know the half of it and there's a lot of "not fair" going around. Don't take me wrong, I understand what you're saying, and honelstly expected at least one of these posts, but there's more than meets the eye here. I'm not going to air-out my family issues that contributed to where I am today (yes, part of it was me not standing my groung), but that's neither here nor there as of now.

It's been about 18 months since everything went to heck on the cat situation and there's just no more to be done internally at this point. I'll keep trying to make the best of the challenge and do the right thing, but I guess the "right" thing is up to interpretation at this point. I'm not at all a fan of the "pen for life' scenario either, which is why I'm working for another solution.
