Thank you for taking the time to reach out to me with your concerns regarding possible gun safety legislation. Your input is critical in strengthening our democratic process.

In the wake of the recent high-profile gun violence that has occurred in Colorado and the nation, it is clear that we must have an ongoing public conversation about gun safety, mental health, and school security. Two gun-related bills were introduced on the first day of the legislative session, Senate Bill 13-09 and House Bill 13-1048. Should I have the opportunity to vote on either of the bills, I assure you I will weigh the options carefully.

I believe that public safety must remain a top priority. Coloradans must collectively find reasonable solutions that protect the Second Amendment rights of our law-abiding citizens while keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people and dealing comprehensively with factors that could contribute to violence, such as mental illness.

Standard form letter that everyone gets and sounds about the same as every other letter i have received.. Basically playing to both sides while staying away from taking an actual stance either way.

Yeah, same standard form letter I got from everyone in Colorado. They've all made up their minds already, so will probably vote along party lines. It's only the Republicans who are being wishy-washy with their public statements that should worry you.

on the plus side, the 2 bills listed seem to both be positive but the session is still fresh. I got a reasonable and direct response from my state house rep mentioning 2 members currently working on not so positive bills.

Dear Senator Hudak,

As a born and raised Colorado resident, I enjoy the many freedoms and opportunities America and Colorado provide. I enjoy the outdoors, particularly the mountains which are what keeps me here. As a professional in the Airline industry I see the world. I see the other states and what they have to offer, yet I remain here in Colorado because it is my true home. My wife is a teacher here in Colorado; she works extremely hard to educate our young minds, to help them achieve more than we did, to give them the best chance for the best opportunities.

One thing that remains strong in Colorado is the 2nd Amendment, allowing hunters, recreation shooters, and those who take their own personal protection to a level above reliance on the police to do so without poor laws that only inhibit their hobbies, interests and professions. The recent tragedies that hit so close to home are unfathomable to comprehend. The senseless violence that has ruined many lives has been at the hands of people who needed help. I am hoping you can see this and will work to either draft or support legislation that will help these people get the type of help they need without overreaching and causing good law abiding citizens to be penalized for the minuet fraction of society who wishes to do harm to others.

Restricting Law abiding citizens from owning certain classes of firearms is not the answer. I personally know people who hunt and put food on their family’s tables with these very weapons. They are among the most popular sporting rifle ever made to date; the millions of law abiding citizens across the country who own them wish no harm upon anyone. They are great people who do their best to be productive in society, work hard at their job, and be a great mother/father/husband/wife.

Please consider these people when you undertake any legislation, whether drafting or voting. Remember that millions of good law abiding people could be turned into criminals due to individuals who would stop at nothing to take their pain and hatred and spread it among as many people as they could. We need to work to stop these individuals, to identify them before another tragedy happens, and to help them turn their life around and find something meaningful in their lives.

I urge to you not support any further restrictions on gun ownership or magazine ownership. It has been proven in different cities and states across this great country that those types of measures fail at every level and only restrict good law abiding citizens. Those who wish to break the law don't care what you or I have to say, they don't care what laws are on the books, and they don't care what happens to them. I believe we need to make tougher penalties on those who break the laws we have already on the books and to get help to the people who are reaching out for it.

I would also ask that you support any proposals that allow are teachers and school staff the ability to go through training such as a concealed weapons course and allow them to carry on school property. They are our first line of defense when it comes to our children. We are already entrusting them to protect our children during inclement weather, times of sickness, natural disasters, emergencies, as well as to identify problems at home, and obviously to educate them. Why not allow teachers the ability to truly protect our children if the need arises? I come from a family of teachers; my wife, dad, mom, sister, brother-in-law and two uncles are/were all teachers. Each one of them would do anything they could to protect their students; a change in the law would better give them the ability to do so.
