My first gun was an H&R Topper Junior .410. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, who had managed to knock the bead sight off of it long before. It was beat all to hell, but being my first gun, I loved it like it was solid gold. A lot of tree rats and rabbits fell before that little break-action .410, no bead sight needed. It wouldn't quite reach out and touch a dove, so it was eventually replaced with a Mossberg 500 when I turned 14. I'm not sure what happened to the Topper, but I think dad passed it on to my nephew when I left for boot camp.

My first gun was also a .410 break open without the bead sight. It had a broken wooden stock that somebody glued back together and painted black. That thing is 113 years old this year and still kills squirrels just fine. Thank God that my family still has that gun. I am going to pass it on to my daughter when she is old enough to shoot. EDIT: Forgot to add that the original firing pin fell out long ago and my father filed down a nail to make the new firing pin. Such an awesome POS.

The first gun I bought, about 30 years ago, was an RG-14 .22 snubnose. It was less than half the size of a J-frame and went BANG every time. Unfortunately, there was no rifling in the bore, and I'm not even sure it was the proper diameter. The bullets weren't just keyholing . . . they were spinning off in random directions. That POS practically shot sideways. I shit you not, from a bench rest TEN FEET (not yards) away from the target, aimed directly at the X-ring on slow single-action fire, only half the rounds were even on the paper . . . and it was a 2'X3' target. Worst gun I ever owned. Might've made a decent starting pistol loaded with blanks.

My first gun was a savage .22 semi auto rifle I inherited from my grandfather when I was 10. I had no idea how to clean it (Im not from a gun toten family). It would shoot 2-3 three rounds then jam. As an adult It was stole during a move into a house located way out in the PA countryside. For old times sake I bought another after moving here to CO. One of my sons said "hey dad John" one of the neighbor boys "had a gun just like that!"
