Can you register switchblade knives?

I have some friend in the national guard that were given some switchblade knifes.

But unless you are in the national guard, swithcblade knifes are illegal to carry in CO.

So is there a way to register them so that when they get out of the national guard, they can keep and carry the knife.

Or are they SOL?

Inside this link it says: "or member of the armed forces of the United States or Colorado National Guard acting in the lawful discharge of his duties, or that said person has a valid permit and license for possession of such weapon."

So is there a way to get a permit/license to carry a switchblade, and where would one start for information?

Years ago I believe possession was illegal but owning was not.
I'm not current on todays regs.

Possessing an illegal weapon is a class 1 misdemeanor. That being said there is a stipulation to allow carry for those with permits but the CRS doesn't specify where or how to obtain a permit. Have your friend contact his local sheriff's office and ask them.

Besides the cool factor, I can't think of a reason why a switchblade knife is really practical for carry. Every now and then mine seems to find a way to deploy in my pocket. Unless we're talking about a true deploy out the end switchblade, assisted opening knives deploy faster and w/o the possibility of popping open in the pocket, not to mention they are legal to carry w/o a permit (if there is such a thing).

My brother is a springs cop and he said switchblades are not illegal if the blade is under 3 and 1 half inches. I asked a Fountain cop, and he also said they are not illegal if under 3 and a half inches. And they both said gravity knives and knives that are shot out of it's handle like a projectile are illegal.

Reading the law on it is very confusing.

Funny this came up this week.I was at the machine gun shoot Saturday and there was a vendor selling such knives(out the front type were going for around $500),so you can own them but not carry them Karl ? Can you buy them from an online company and have them mailed to you ? I'm just curious because it seems to be a confusing law concerning them.Also if I was going to spend that kind of money I'd sure as hell buy a gun instead.Thanks.

C.R.S. 18-12-101 Definitions:
"Switchblade knife" means any knife, the blade of which opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring, or other device in its handle.
"Gravity knife" means any knife that has a blade released from the handle or the sheath therof by the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force, that when released is locked in place by means of a button, spring, lever, or other device.
18-12-102(2) As used in this section, the term "illegal weapon" means a blackjack, gas gun, metallic knuckles, gravity knife, or switchblade knife.
(4) A person who knowingly possesses an illegal weapon commits a class 1 misdemeanor.
On a side note, why won't this thing let me type centrifugal with out taking out F-U-G, that's hilarious. C-E-N-T-R-I-F-U-G-A-L. OMG I'm so dirty with my big science words.

"Ballistic knife" means any knife that has a blade which is forcefully projected from the handle by means of a spring loaded device or explosive charge.
Oddly enough, a ballistic knife is termed a "dangerous weapon" which is a step above "illegal weapon" and therby possession of one is classified as a class 5 felony.

Well the evil switch Blade most be controlled. As a good citizen why would you need one. The Government will provide for your safety. Are you part of the global community or not? For the better good of all! Stop relying on yourself, relax and let the State take care of you, we know what's best.

Thanks Karl-This post has raised my curiousity about purchasing and ownership even though I have no reason for either. I've noticed that some sites state you must be active military or LEO to purchase from them while others don't state that ?? So according to you it's also illegal for them to sell to someone in another state ?? Thanks for your knowledge Karl.

I had my friend read these. It just seems like the law states that you can carry one of these if you are LEO or in military with-in reason, or if you have a permit.

Yet the law does not say what permit you can fill out to make it OK.

My friend is going to talk with the local sheriff, but we have come to the conclusion that it can only be a collectible, and not be carried around. Which is a shame, cause I think the laws for knives need to be updated. I would think it fair for CCW to at least carry them like the old laws allowed.
