The Africa Cup of Nations officially known as CAN is a tournament held every 2 years. This year they are switching it to odd number years so it doesn't clash with FIFA tournaments. As the name implies it is a tournament of Africa.

This year South Africa is hosting because Libya traded hosting duties with them for obvious reasons. (Nowhere to play)

So here is the proclamation from the brains trust that rules South Africa

“I hope an African team wins the African cup” - South Africa ’s President had a moment of brilliance during the opening ceremony of the African Cup of Nations – President Jacob Zuma.

Sorry if I don't get it. Are there ONLY African teams in the tournament? If that's the case, then yeah, now I get it. I'm not well-versed on International football.

If you live on the continent of Africa you are by default african. Race has no bearing. Egypt is no less an african country than say Kenya. Americans have bastardized the word to mean black to suit their own agenda.

Actually you live on a continent called "North America" and therefore are a North American as contrasted with a South American. It is a regional title not a nationality or a race. Just as a person in India is an Asian as much as the person in Nepal or the person in China.

Africa is deeply tribal and the southern, sub-Saharan non-Arabic groups and the Northern Arabs and Berbers have no love for each other. The War Nerd at the Exiled has written extensively on this.
