ATLANTA, Ga. — John Elway appeared on “Piers Morgan Tonight” Thursday, riffing on a number of topics. Some were football related, others were anything but.A topic that fell into the latter category was gun control.
Perhaps recognizing the Denver Broncos Vice President as a man that might have had a dissenting viewpoint, the liberal Morgan, who has been heavily criticized for his anti-gun stances, pressed the issue on Elway, a well-known conservative who endorsed Mitt Romney at a rally in Denver last year.
Elway’s answer seemed to surprise the talk show host.
“I don’t own a machine gun,” Elway said when Morgan asked for the former quarterback’s opinion on “military-style rifles that can pump out 100 bullets a minute.”
When Morgan continued to ask if Elway could see a reason why anyone would need such a weapon, Elway responded “I do not.”
“I’m still kind of waiting to hear both sides of it,” Elway said in reference to changes President Barack Obama has proposed to gun control legislation. “I’m a gun owner and I’m a hunter and I enjoy that and I respect the Second Amendment.
“(The assault weapon side) of the debate is the side I’m waiting to hear about.”
Elway continued to say he was open to the idea of banning assault rifles and high capacity magazines.
“If that’s the solution that can prevent some of these catastrophes going on at these grade schools, then I’m all for the solution,” he said.
