    Default Letter to Senator Bennett

I wrote the following letter to Bennett because his response to my email pissed me off:
    Senator Michael Bennett
    1127 Sherman St., Suite 150
    Denver, Colorado 80203

    Dear Senator Bennett,
I recently contacted you to express to you my strong opposition to the proposed gun control legislation in the US Congress. In your form response, you made mention of closing the “gun show loophole”. I continue to be infuriated when politicians make reference to the “gun show loophole”.

There is no such thing. The Gun Control Act of 1968 first required that dealers in firearms be licensed by the government and the system of ATF regulated Federal Firearms Licensees was created. Persons of different states were forbidden from transferring firearms between themselves without an FFL dealer and the completion of a Federal Form 4473 (false statements on which were a criminal offense).

When the Brady Act required background checks to be made in all 50 states, on sales made by FFL’s, for the first time, transactions between private parties who were residents of the same state were not covered. And they were not intended to be covered. Sales by dealers require background checks regardless of where the sale is conducted, as the dealers’ store or a gun show. Claims to the contrary by gun control activists are intentional falsehoods.

Private parties who are residents of the same state and who find each other at a gun show are not required by Federal law to conduct a background check or use the services of an FFL. Just as they would not be so required if they found each other on Craigslist, in a classified newspaper ad, or by simply being neighbors. There is no “Craigslist loophole”, there is no “classified ad loophole” and there is no “gun show loophole”. It is a fraudulent slogan.

There is a Colorado state law that requires that people who do happen to find each other at a gun show are required to conduct a background check. The actual result is that my private gun club must now forbid its members from selling guns to each other on club property for fear that the annual club picnic be considered a “gun show”. And no appreciable effect on crime.

Please cease repeating the lies of gun control organizations.

He is the Jeff Spicoli of the US Senate. I wouldn't expect anything of brilliance from him.

    Spicoli was smarter;

What Jefferson was saying was, Hey! You know, we left this England place 'cause it was bogus; so if we don't get some cool rules ourselves - pronto - we'll just be bogus too! Get it?

A dollar says this gets yet another canned response, if any response is indeed made. Even when talking to our "representatives" face to face, they do not actually listen.

I wouldn't be surprised if you got the exact same response that you are replying to. I just got the same exact response to two completely different issues over a month apart. Way to represent the people of Colorado Bennet you ass hat.

It would be better to address him w/ his "no double-t" name... Apparently it's "Michael F. Bennet"

Ahh, yeah, and who knows where that come from/speaks volumes.

    'Nuff said...

    This the one?

    Dear kevin:
Thank you for contacting me regarding some of the different gun proposals that have been introduced during the 113th Congress, including S.2 introduced by Senator Harry Reid, S.150 introduced by Senator Diane Feinstein, and the proposal put forth by President Obama. I appreciate hearing from you.
The numerous tragedies that our nation has had to face over the past year have been staggering. My own family, like all Americans, has been repeatedly shocked and deeply saddened by the violence we have witnessed, and my heart continues to be with the victims and their families. As Coloradans, we know how this type of tragedy can shake a community to its core and in the aftermath of these abhorrent acts our priority should be on supporting the survivors and families, and healing our communities.
We must have a real discussion in this country about finding ways to stop these senseless shootings. I believe a combination of improved access to mental health services, restrictions on certain weapons intended for warfare, and elimination of the gun show loophole are sensible steps that can protect our communities and particularly, our children. In Colorado, we support the right to bear arms and the ability of people to recreate, hunt, and protect their homes, and we want to keep the wrong weapons out the hands of the wrong people. I believe we can have a civil discussion that addresses these issues and as the recommendations by the President's task force are considered in Congress, we will ensure that Colorado's voices are heard.
In addition to the bills referenced above, there are a number of different legislative proposals on gun policy currently before Congress. I am evaluating all of the different bills, and I will keep your thoughts in mind as we work on this issue in the Senate. Let us all continue to keep the communities affected by these tragic acts in our thoughts and prayers.

I value the input of fellow Coloradans in considering the wide variety of important issues and legislative initiatives that come before the Senate. I hope you will continue to inform me of your thoughts and concerns.
For more information about my priorities as a U.S. Senator, I invite you to visit my website at http://bennet.senate.gov/. Again, thank you for contacting me.

    Sincerely,

    Michael F. Bennet
    United States Senator

I think I would be less pissed if I got no reply at all. Each reply is more aggravating than the last.

I've sent letters to Bennet and Udall from several email accounts, including my wife's. The response was basically:

    "Dear XXXX,

Blah, blah, blah, liberal gun-ban bullshit, blah, blah.

    Sincerely,

    MFB"

At least Bennet, unlike Udall, had the courtesy to have his staffer's use my name.
