Ok, I'll admit I'm not a big fan of the AR series of rifles (probably from wearing a green suit so long and dealing with substandard versions of everything). However, my police department allows us to buy our own rifles in lieu of carrying a department-owned gun (which are only zeroed to "mechanical zero..." not to the individual shooter because they're "pool guns."). The department's set-up is ridiculous to say the least.
I've been carrying a Colt rifle that belongs to a friend, but he's been bugging me about buying my own. So today I bought a Rock River Arms LAR-15, their version of the M4. This has the flat top and a rear peep sight. It is designed so you can mount an optical sight in addition to the iron sight.
I'm always a big fan of iron sights, especially in a gun that rides in the trunk -- the batteries never die. However, I am faster with a red dot, so I figure if I can use both, why not? If the batteries die then just look through the iron sights...slower, but always there.
I don't know a lot about red dot sights, always having opted for ol' reliable irons. What do you guys recommend? I tend to like the more open style ones better, not the ones in an enclosed tube like a traditional scope.
