Default No DL For Disabled Vet

Disabled veteran must prove his citizenship to renew license

So we have several states issuing driver licenses to illegal aliens. But TX won't issue this man, a Viet Nam war vet with an expired TX DL, a new DL without a copy of his birth certificate. In addition to his expired TX license he has a social security card and his VA ID. How fucked up is that? Especially when you read this:

A Texas driver’s license is among the top documents that undocumented immigrants need to get to a job. A new initiative to provide work permits and “deferred action” on deportations for certain illegal immigrants quickly raised questions about whether those approved for work permits would get driver’s licenses, too.

The answer is yes, say officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The work permit, known as an employment authorization document or I-766, is one of the primary documents used for a limited period driver’s license. Various kinds of noncitizens, from refugees to temporary residents, now receive these temporary driver’s licenses.

“Someone who has been granted “deferred action” and presents an employment authorization document (EAD or I-766) meets the Department’s current lawful presence and identification policy,” said Tom Vinger, a spokesman for the Public Safety Department. “If they are otherwise eligible (i.e. have met residency, SSN, and other requirements), they can be issued a driver license set to expire when the EAD expires.”

    Nothing surprises me any more.

if it kept illegals from getting a license, then I would say, "sorry for the extra trouble sir, but its a matter of national security"

since illegals are getting licenses, it sucks.

He didn't have the proper paperwork .

You gotta have the proper paperwork .

If the paperwork he brought in is not on the approved list well .. there ya go .

The DMV employees have to follow the law just like the rest of us .. Disabled Vet or not.

I was born in Texas, lived there, did my time in the service, raised a family there too. I let my license lapse and had to send off and get my BC because my original (and DD-214) had been lost in a fire. A pain, but I have to say, BFD.
Hell, you should have seen the hoops I had to go through to get a license in CO.

So this reminds me of some good advice I read somewhere. Scan all of your important docs for you and your family (DL, passport, birth certificate, SSN card, marriage certificate, etc) and put them on an encrypted flash drive (and cloud storage depending on your level of paranoia).

If you have to bug out in a disaster, not counting the complete collapse of society, you can prove who you are.
