#2. I'd be scared to death that the stairs wouldn't handle the weight of the safe and all the necessary grunts. I've read horror stories of collapsed stairs and mangled bodies.

If I bought a big safe for my basement, I'd go with one from Zanotti Armor. They come in 6 pieces, plus the optional interior package however you want it. You tote the parts downstairs, then assemble it in place.
