My Response To Irene Aguilar's Email

I know a bunch of you have received the form letter response from Irene Aguilar where she says "none of these gun control bills infringe on the 2nd Amendment."

The woman is clearly demented, and I have no desire to beat my head against a brick wall in trying to persuade her with reason.

So I appealed to her sense of equality. The bottom line is that even for a Democrat, these bills are bad. Here's my letter to her:

Senator Aguilar,

You're certainly free to believe whatever you like about what is or isn't relevant to the 2nd Amendment. I know for a fact that you've been corrected on that issue, and see no need to waste my time trying to convince you otherwise.


However, you'll have to excuse me for being more practically minded.


A bill that would allow a law-abiding citizen to be thrown in prison for up to a year, for the mere possession of a metal box with a spring in it is fundamentally unjust. Causing a law-abiding citizen to lose his/her job, home, and possibly family is the height of inanity.


A bill that would punish not just mature college students, but faculty and staff who've met the requirements for concealed carry simply because they do so on a college campus is patently foolhardy and will do nothing whatsoever to stop mentally deranged individuals from walking onto a college campus with a gun and opening fire. (I assume that you agree with your co-legislator Jessie Uliberri who thinks that a pen is a sufficient weapon to stop a gunman?)


A bill that would require people to pay a fee in order to exercise a fundamental civil right is no different than a poll tax, and as a Democrat, I would have expected you to have greater sensitivity on issues of equality and civil rights.


As to the bill that requires universal background checks, I'll just note that it makes an exception for a transfer of a gun between a man and his wife, but the same transfer between two loving partners in a gay relationship would be a crime. As a Democrat, I would have expected you to stand up for equality, rather than sinking to the bigoted level of the most hateful social conservatives.


These bills are all fundamentally bad law, and while I can appreciate the desire to reduce gun violence, it's clear that the authors are not interested in paying attention to the negative fallout of these bills.
