Like Hanes underwear, I'm tagless
S&W model names?
What are the various names (e.g. Combat Masterpiece) for the S&W revolver models? When did they drop the names for strictly model numbers?

S&W is a dark and mysterious outfit that seems to do things totally at random, sometimes changing dash numbers if someone on the line wears a different color hat. I do have an M15 so I do know the combat masterpiece bit but otherwise your best bet on anything S&W is probably : WWW.smith-wessonforum.com .
Take a look , you'll like it.

CO-AR's Secret Jedi
Smith and Wesson dropped the names in the late 50s.
The book to get is the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, 3rd edition - Amazon $25.47 and free shipping - http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Catal...on+4th+edition - some doofus named it the 4th edition, it is the 3rd edition, if the 4th were available I'd have it already
http://smith-wessonforum.com/lounge/...-w-4th-ed.html - Talks about the 4th edition which apparently is NOT going to be produced
Here are a few:
Registered Magnum - 357 Magnum Model 27 N Frame
Highway Patrolman - Model 28 357 Magnum N Frame
2 1/2 and 4 inch guns were Combat Masterpiece - A Model 18 for instance
6 and 8 3/8 in guns were Target Masterpiece - A Model 17 for instance
Military and Police - Model 10 .38 Special fixed sight
Model of 1917 - 45ACP revolvers made towards the end of WWI - I have one, it is a dream to shoot.

Newbie, or Trading Post Troll
Smith assigned Model numbers to their guns in 1957 and they did not spart shopping guns that were model marked until early in 1958. Most all models had a name associated with them but most people call them by their model number only.
