Emissions For Classic Vehicles

An add in the TP is getting hosed with emissions questions. Let's bring it to where it belongs.

The DMV FUBARed classic vehicle registration a few years back and I still haven't figured out the details.

I have two classic vehicles. One was registered in Larimer Co and only needed a pipe test once to get classic plates. The second went through Boulder Co and after an extensive rectal exam, passed the one time emissions test for collector plates.

My understanding is that '76 is the magic year. Before that, you get a one time emissions test. After that, it's every other year testing.

Opening a PO Box in WY and registering vehicles there fixes most all the problems.

Ideas? Fact? Theories?

If the registration is good for 5 years so is the smog test. This info also agrees with what our friend was told by DMV & scamissions testers when he had to test prior to plates for his 51 merc

Antique Plates
Instead of antique plates, Colorado offers collector plates. To qualify, your car or light truck (less than 16,000 pounds empty weight) must be at least 25 years old. Registration is valid for five years.

• Enhanced Area - The full counties of Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson, as well as the partial counties of Adams, Arapahoe, Larimer and Weld.
• Basic Area - El Paso county. The gas vehicle emissions program has ended in this area but the diesel program is still in effect.

Before we did away with testing. you did it once and as long as you did not let it expire you did not have to get another.

Anything 75 and older. If you already have plates on a 76 and newer you can keep them as long as you do not let them expire. My TA is grandfathered but then again it may be good because I went through this issue with my 72.

The car year starts in the fall of the year before. In 96 I applied for my collector plates on my 72 GTO. I was told that it was not 25 yet. It took a supervisor to explain to the clerk that the "72" model year started in 71. I got my plates. So depending on how much of an asshole your clerk is...

And I missed getting my 86 aerocoupe plates by a year.

BTW: I passed a STOCK Javelin 2 weeks ago in Ft Fun. Ah the days of street racing and pink slips.

I can only speak from experience. When I bought my 66 impala, in arapahoe county 3 years ago, I did not have emissions and was able to get collector plates. I was told I needed emissions if I wanted regular plates and since the car has no cat.... Um!

What vehicles are exempt?
A.
Electric powered vehicles are exempt. New vehicles are exempt for the first 4 model years. Vehicles registered and plated in the categories of: horseless carriage, street rod, farm, kit cars, collector, and motorcycles are exempt from emissions testing.

negative, I have a diesel and all the emissions fell off when I hit a pot hole one day, and el paso county still tests diesels.
