    You know, for emergencies.
Is the M&Ms thing a military thing? I keep seeing references to M&Ms as an emergency-type snack especially from former and current military members, and it seemed to be a thing with my dad (he was Army, but not around anymore to ask).

Quick sugar, taste good, and the best of the candies they put in the MREs.
Other MRE candy... peanut M&Ms, Twizzlers bites, Reese's pieces... I think that's it. I save em, put em in an empty pouch on my kit and eat em later.

M&Ms as a snack are hard to beat- you get a boost of sugar, it's an agreeable flavor that doesn't fight with coffee, and is a small shot of nostalgia. Every base I've been to has M&Ms offered as a snack.

I don't know what the military folk do in the hotter climates, though- I've never dealt with that problem.

The reason for the ammo can and M&Ms has more to do with keeping mice away than portability...

Makes sense. Yeah, kinda nostalgic for me too as my dad always carried them as snacks when we hit the slopes.
