Yeah I would not consider a range as a location for soft targets. Though the whole story is an exercise in "wtf?"

Pistol whipped the knife fellow so the bad guys had guns...most would shoot them first and then try and subdue. Odd that without shooting them the people from the shooting range were able to get them in controll.

The range in question, I'll have to see if I can find my pictures of the parking lot. It was the only place close enough to shoot at when I lived on the north side of Houston.
