So I took this pic when we were camping recently. I think it was laying eggs. Bummer for her because she layed them in my fire wood. So what the heck is it?

Looks like a cross between a wasp and a cicada killer. Never seen that before.

We always called them "Stump Humpers" because they are always laying their eggs on the bark of trees. They are a type of wasp and I've seen them almost 2" long. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be stung by one!

It's a wood wasp. Looks like a urocerus gigas flavicornis, yellow-horned horntail. The larvae bore into the wood. The ovipositor on the backside is for laying eggs and is not a stinger.

...but I'm no expert and I could be wrong.

Now if we could only train it to kill the pine beetle, we just might have something.
