Going back many years to DUI enforcement training...

It seems to me we were taught that impurities in the alcoholic beverages, some of which were natural and some of which were added, were the main cause of the headaches. Chemical changes in the substance that occurred during the fermentation process also were a cause.

Those additives and impurities are also why people develop that distinct odor on their breath after drinking most alcoholic drinks. More difficult to detect that odor with more pure spirits like highly distilled vodka.

But that was over 20 years ago. My memory may not be correct.

Avoid sugars, dark liqours, and caffeine. It's dehydration, believe me. Caffeine is a dyuretic, dehydrates you. Years of field work and a ton of hangovers. Glass of water before you start drinking, one before bed, one when you wake up. No sugar, no caffiene on the day you drink.

I drink a lot of coffee because it is free at work. Fortunately, I don't care if it is caffeinated or not.

Makes sense. I don't consume much caffeine other than a soda every once in a while and I don't have much of a problem with hangovers. Usually if I get one it's gone by mid-day.

Although now that I think about it, last time I had jager and red bull the following morning was pretty miserable...ya know, you might be on to something!
