Default Follow up: gave my stepson .22 for birthday

On Monday I gave my stepson, an 8 year old 2nd grader, a .22 rifle for his birthday. On Tuesday I had to take him out of school an hour early for <none of you business >.

I walk into his classroom and find that there are no kids in there at all. His teacher is there though, so I tell her that I needed to take my stepson out early for yadda yadda. She says that the kids are at gym (good!) but they will be back in about 5 minutes. OK, no problem I'll just wait.

The teacher is very nice and we have never had any sort of concern with her at all.

But (there's always a "but") she feels the need to mention that, "<my stepson> told the whole class that he got a gun for his birthday".

She stops and looks at me. I just say, "Yeah, that's right."

She then says, "Well, that led into a lengthy discussion about guns in our class...it's amazing how many of these kids have shot guns before."

My response was "Well, yeah, we're in Gilpin County here..."

She just gave me a "funny" look...you know the look. I just wish I had a better response prepared. I don't know what exactly, but I was taken off guard a bit.

Not sure why I'm posting this....venting I guess?

You should invite her (and if she has a husband) to go to the range with you and your wife. Stress safety, in fact go heavy on it. Let her know they are fun to shoot and not to be feared.

Or go into the fact that the best way to have children be safe around guns is for them to trained in the safe use of them.

I'd befriend the teacher a little more, just as a precautionary measure and definitely offer to do (or organize) a gun safety orientation with the students/school, if they'll allow it. The last thing you want is some lefty teacher conniving against you and your stepson because she now knows you're a gun owner.

Like Sawin said. You should have her try and do an Eddie Eagle class, or you facilitate it!

Its amazing how much culture has changed over the years. I remember going to school with a shotgun in the back window of my truck so I could go hunting after school and it was completely OK.

Count your blessings, in many other places you would be up for child endangerment charges or your step-son would be suspended for talking about it.

As already posted I would offer to take her shooting.
