Default Magpul Urges You To Stay In The Fight!

From Duane at Magpul on M4Carbine.net

"Still just passed from committee only...floor debate and voice vote on Friday. Counted Vote Monday. We've still got cards to play. Good ones."

    __________________________________________________ ________________________________________________

"Thanks Larry [Vickers], and everyone...appreciate the support. Keep the calls and emails going in CO and nationwide. This is going to be a nail-biter here, but it's far from over.

Thanks also to the HUGE showing today at the Capitol against these bills. The grass roots efforts have been truly impressive.

Once again, the CO Sheriffs made a powerful showing also, countering the police chiefs' message.

Thanks also to everyone who testified or waited all day only to not get a turn at the mic. The committee may have had their minds made up in advance, but those arguments will be seen again on the floor during the debate.

And, support the NRA...they've been instrumental in the efforts here.

    Stay in the fight!"

Tochtrop and Jahn aren't guaranteed, and Todd is just showing a glimmer (do not write nasty stuff to her - she's warming up, possibly) , but it isnt "impossible" at all....

I was there and tried to get in, it was a zoo. I'd like to note the State Troopers were great, in particular given the difficult day. The Sgt I chatted with after being shut out of the hearing chamber was a sold pro gun guy to boot.

Anyway, this what I was going to say if given the chance. The upper case emphasis was for me to change tone or point during the presentation:

    Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening.

I’m here to voice my opposition to any restrictions on so-called Assault Weapons or magazines. While I feel for the families who’ve lost during tragic events by unstable people, THIS body is clearly ignoring the obvious but more difficult problem. YOU are doing a disservice to the victims’ families and all law abiding citizens.

I’ve compromised my presumption of innocents many years ago ONLY to learn that background checks do not verify mental health records, ALLOWING mentally unstable people to purchase firearms. We simply shrug and say ‘the system failed’. THIS BODY has the responsibility to fix that system rather than punish the law abiding. YOU have the power to change those checks.

Over the last 30 years there has been a trend to de-institutionalize mentally ill people. Given this trend you MUST take action or prepare yourself for more incidents like Aurora.
Do it despite the strong medical & mental health lobbies.

I’ve also heard a number of powerful people asking why anyone needs an AR15. They clearly illustrate they don’t understanding of what a right is.

Why did Rosa Parks NEED to sit at the front of the bus folks?

I view my AR15 as an insurance policy that I can enjoy on the weekends in 3 gun or carbine competitions. I NEED it in the event I experience something along the lines of hurricane Katrina or the King riots. Clearly the government did not fore fill its obligation to protect the community during those incidents. Therefore I need a reasonable tool, that’s my AR15. It’s simply the best tool for the job.

I know you are going to say those are very rare events, so I don’t NEED my AR15. Rely upon you and the government.
Well, I’ve never had a house fire yet I have a fire extinguisher. Nor a crash on my bicycle where I hit my head, yet I wear a helmet. I’d do the same if I rode a motorcycle.
Those large storms happen often enough for the government to urge people to buy flood insurance. We’ve all seen the commercials.

Focusing on HEALTHY law abiding citizens, insisting I give up my rights while ignoring mental health issues is going to ensure you have more tragedies like Aurora.

I’ve also heard many powerful people claim the 2nd Amendment and gun rights in general are outdated and not necessary. If we have nothing to fear from government abuses of power why do we need the 4th, 5th 6th Amendments to the Constitution?

Lastly, there is currently a government bid out for a so-called PDW (for ICE). It’s a short barreled, concealable M4 carbine capable of full auto and semi fire. The US Marines went to 3 rd burst in the early 80s. Sure ICE goes up against some very bad guys, but why the hypocrisy of calling it a Personal Defense Weapon while my semi auto is an Assault Weapon?

    Thank you for your time.

    ====================================
I also noted the behavior of the anti gun folks, it was kind of funny. They are not used to being around anyone that thinks differently than they do, they were clearly uncomfortable and very quiet. A photo journalist from some local mag was there and wanted to chat the issue with me in the security line. He had the usual 'ring wing extremist' BS lines. I was in a suit, tie & over coat, USMC lapel pin, basically looking sharp in anticipation of speaking. I politely shut him down in a matter of minutes. He decided to stop talking.

The really sad thing there was the senate kept changing the rules for the day. Then the limited speakers to only 30 for the chamber I wanted to get into. There was at least 1,000 in that building that wanted to get into the senate chambers that did not get in let alone speak.

I'm beginning to believe this really isn't a fight. Let's face it. When you're on the side with no power whatsoever to change the outcome of the dispute it really isn't a fight. All we've been doing is organizing and tirelessly voicing our opposition to the unchecked tyranny of the democrat party controlling our state government. Not saying that's not a good thing...but I don't think it's fighting yet.

The democrats don't have to do anything. I honestly believe they see our efforts as an annoyance...not a fight. Because they don't have to raise a finger to resist our all out assault against their anti-freedom agenda. At this point they are completely immune to anything we throw against them. It's like trying to sink a battleship with a BB gun.

Now, it may be a fight at some point in the future and I'm not saying the ever-growing and united opposition isn't worthwhile. Just the opposite. I think it will be fruitful but just not right now.

We're not fighting yet. We're just in training...we're organizing. The fight will have to come later because right now they just aren't vulnerable.

I hope a couple of democrats prove me wrong in the full senate vote.

    Dear Sen Todd:

I respectfully urge you to resist your party's pressure and vote for what's right regarding the current crop of Second Amendment-restricting bills now being considered by the senate.

You've heard emotional pleas from many. You've heard from out-of-state people who have no stake in our state government. From the pro-gun side you've heard facts, logic and reason. The entire 62-members of the County Sheriff's of Colorado have voiced their opposition. Businesses that employ hundreds have told you of the negative impacts this legislation will have on them and hundreds of Colorado families.

Do what's right, Senator. Lead the way as a voice of reason within your party and vote "NO" on all of the current anti-freedom bills in the senate.

    Thank you.

    Bailey,

I understand the feeling you, and a lot of gun owners have right now. I think this is due in large part to the novice amount of activism most of us have experienced to this point. Most of us have had a steep learning curve on this subject including myself.

You're right when you say that they are in complete control. I'll concede that the majority of bills will pass. The bill we have a singular chance at stopping is 1224. This is due to two senators moving over.

I have spent a lot of time at the Capitol and feel that it is worth trying to push to the end, if only on this bill alone. One more senator is needed, out of a list of around six that could go.

We as a collective are neophytes when it comes to this subject if activism. Let's finish this strong, on the chance that one bill may fall.
